Excerpt:
‘Often regarded as insignificant in the hierarchy of art’s traditional genres, the still life has proved to be a remarkably adaptable and enduring mode of expression. Within its seemingly narrow framework of ‘everyday objects, the still life, far from dying discreetly away in the early 221st century, has grown, proliferated and become almost luxurious in the many ways it has chosen to manifest itself in contemporary art, from surreal to the merely strange, and from the contemplation of the static to an examination of how time and movement affect the ordinary things that surround us.’
‘Both the artists Cecile Johnson Soliz and Jane Simpson use the still life paintings by Giorgio Morandi as a starting point. Vases for a Painter of Still Lifes by Johnson Soliz takes one vase by Morandi and reproduces it, changing its form, dividing it into pieces and turning it upside down.’
